A former commercial space located in the historic El Born district of Barcelona, Spain, has been reborn as a unique residential space. ‘El Born Loft’, designed by architect Roman Izquierdo Bouldstridge, took the concept of ‘emptiness’ as its core design philosophy in this 85㎡ project.

The project was completed in 2026, and according to architecture media, it was designed with inspiration from Eastern philosophy, especially Lao Tzu's concept of space.

Lao Tzu philosophy meets modern architecture

The most notable aspect of this project is its application of ancient Eastern philosophy to modern residential architecture. Lao Tzu once said, “The usefulness of a room lies in its empty space,” and the architect used this philosophy as the basis for space design.

The El Bon district is one of Barcelona's most historic districts, serving as a commercial and cultural center since the Middle Ages. In this historical context, the work of converting commercial space into residential space carries the meaning of urban regeneration beyond simple renovation.

The project used products from leading European lighting and interior brands such as JUNG, Santa & Cole, and Marset, sanitary ware from Roca and VitrA, and finishing materials from Finsa and Mapei to meet both functionality and aesthetics.

The images taken by architectural photographer José Hevia delicately capture the harmony of light and space and show how the philosophy of emptiness is implemented in actual space.
