Summary
  • A fire broke out in the early morning near the Sambimun Gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace and was extinguished within 10 minutes.
  • It is believed to be a spontaneous combustion, and some of the auxiliary pillars of the side door and the new door were damaged.
  • It is operating normally with no casualties, and the National Heritage Administration has begun repairs.

Key facts

At around 5:30 a.m. on the 28th, a fire broke out near Sambimun in front of Jasandang, Gyeongbokgung Palace, Seoul. A safety guard on night patrol discovered smoke and put out the fire with a fire extinguisher and hydrant. The fire was completely extinguished at around 5:50 a.m., about 20 minutes later.

According to the National Heritage Administration, one auxiliary pillar of the side gate next to the Sambimun Gate and part of Shinbangmok (tree inserted horizontally under the door jamb or pillar) were damaged. There were no casualties, and according to a joint investigation by related agencies, spontaneous combustion is presumed to be the cause.

On-site response and operation status

After completing its own extinguishment, the Gyeongbokgung Palace management office reported it to the fire department to prepare for any emergency. National Heritage Administration Director Heo Min personally inspected the site, and upon opening at 9 a.m., a screen was installed near the Sambimun Gate to adjust the viewing flow. Gyeongbokgung Palace was operating normally that day.

The National Heritage Administration said, “We have been expanding security personnel since the beginning of this month in preparation for the BTS performance,” and added, “We will fully inspect the safety situation of major palaces and royal tombs.”

Gyeongbokgung Palace Status

Gyeongbokgung Palace is the royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty and was designated as a historic site in 1963. Last year, there were 6.88 million visitors, making it Korea's representative cultural heritage site, accounting for 38.7% of all visitors to palaces and tombs.
