Summary
  • Nintendo is selling digital versions of Switch 2 exclusive games for $10 cheaper than the physical versions
  • It will be applied from May 2026, and 'Yoshi and the Mysterious Book' will be the first to be applied
  • It is analyzed as a strategic pricing policy resulting from rising component prices and pressure from U.S. tariffs.

Digital version, cheaper than physical package

Nintendo has announced changes to its pricing policy for titles exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. market. For new Switch 2 exclusive releases scheduled to be released starting in May 2026, the digital version will be sold at a lower recommended retail price (MSRP) than the physical package version.

Nintendo explained that this change "reflects the differences in production and distribution costs for each format and is a measure to provide players with more choices in how they purchase and play games."

The first target of this policy is 'Yoshi and the Mysterious Book', with the digital version priced at $59.99 and the physical package version priced at $69.99. However, the existing pricing policy will be maintained for titles such as 'Mario Kart World' and 'Donkey Kong Bananza' that were released before this announcement.

Strategic choice amid rising component prices and tariff pressure

This change in pricing policy comes amid complex cost pressures facing Nintendo. Nintendo is under constant pressure on production costs due to rising component prices and U.S. tariff policies.

Prior to the launch of Switch 2 in June of last year, Nintendo announced an increase in the price of Switch 2 accessories in the United States due to market conditions. Regarding the console price, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa did not rule out the possibility of a future increase.

President Furukawa noted, “The ongoing memory component shortage is progressing at a faster pace than expected, which may put pressure on profitability.” He added, “The decision to change the price will be made by comprehensively considering not only profitability, but also platform installation base, sales trends, and market environment.”

Meanwhile, according to industry reports, Nintendo is reportedly adjusting Switch 2 production in the U.S. due to sluggish sales at the end of the year. Initially, production of 6 million units was planned for this quarter, but the production was reduced to 4 million units as console sales did not meet expectations. President Furukawa said that since the launch of the low-priced Japanese domestic model, hardware sales in the Japanese market have surpassed other markets.
