From an old house to a creative hub

An old house in the Pinheiros district of Sao Paulo, Brazil, has been reborn as a complex creative space for chefs. This project, designed by Nádia Manssur of the architectural office NMDM.ARQ, will be completed in 2025 and is attracting attention in the architectural world.

Named 'Gio Kitchen Atelier', this space has a total area of 300 square meters and combines three functions - an industrial kitchen, creative studio, and event space - into one building.

Author: The meeting of gastronomy and architecture

The protagonist of this project is a chef who embraces authorial gastronomy, artisanal production, and collaboration with major brands. The architect focused on the concept of 'hybrid space' to spatially implement the chef's multi-layered work method.

While respecting the structural framework of traditional residential buildings, professional kitchen facilities and flexible space configuration necessary for creative activities were added. Ducts, exhaust systems, air conditioning equipment, and lighting design were carefully planned to ensure both practicality and aesthetic perfection.

Project completed through collaboration

Experts from various fields participated in this project. The structural design was done by Tetos Cunha Estruturas Metálicas and Wedge Montagens, and the lighting design was done by Reka Iluminação. Products from various brands such as Marcenaria Baraúna and The Noguchi Museum Shop were used for furniture and interior elements, adding depth to the space.

The project images taken by photographer Maíra Acayaba delicately capture the atmosphere of a space where natural and artificial light are combined.

A new model of urban regeneration and conversion of use

São Paulo's Pinheiros region has recently emerged as a creative hub where artists, chefs, and designers gather. This project, which converts old residential areas to new uses without demolishing them, is evaluated as a desirable example of urban regeneration.

The method of incorporating modern functions while maintaining the framework of the existing building is also meaningful in terms of environmental sustainability. This is because construction waste and carbon emissions can be reduced by choosing renovation instead of complete new construction.
