President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on April 12 to declare, "I don't want a Pope who thinks it's OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon," labeling Pope Leo XIV as "Weak on Nuclear Weapons." The attack came days after the U.S.-born pontiff publicly criticized Trump's threat that "a whole civilization will die tonight" — a post aimed at Iran.

However, a review of official Vatican statements and widely reported remarks reveals that Leo XIV's actual position is the polar opposite of what Trump described.

What the Pope Actually Said

In a March 5 video message, Leo XIV called on nations to "renounce weapons and choose the path of dialogue and diplomacy," adding: "May the nuclear threat never again dictate the future of humanity."

On March 8, he urged prayers for "the roar of bombs to cease" as Iran's conflict expanded. In June 2025, he appealed for a world "free from the nuclear threat" and stated plainly: "No-one should ever threaten the existence of another." At a general audience in St. Peter's Square that same month, he declared: "We must never get used to war. The temptation to have recourse to powerful and sophisticated weapons needs to be rejected."

When asked by reporters for evidence backing the weapons claim, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly simply redirected to Trump's original Truth Social post.

The Flashpoint: Iran Threats

The dispute escalated after Trump's April 7 post warning Iran that "a whole civilization will die tonight." Leo XIV responded that threats against an entire population are "truly unacceptable" — prompting Trump's retaliatory social media campaign.

Aboard a flight to Algeria, the pope told reporters: "I have no fear of either the Trump administration, or speaking out loudly of the message of the Gospel... Blessed are the peacemakers is a message that the world needs to hear today." He pledged to "continue to speak out loudly against war."

The Holy See signed and ratified the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in 2017.

This anti-nuclear posture has deep roots. Since Pope John XXIII's 1963 encyclical Pacem in Terris, written amid Cold War nuclear brinkmanship, the Vatican has grown increasingly critical of deterrence-based security strategies. Pope Francis declared even the possession of nuclear weapons immoral in 2019 — a stance Leo XIV has inherited and amplified.

With approximately 70 million Catholics in the United States — roughly 20% of the population — the sight of an American-born pope in open conflict with a sitting U.S. president carries significant domestic resonance. As the Trump administration escalates pressure over Iran's nuclear program, analysts suggest the Vatican's insistence on dialogue and multilateralism will likely continue to generate friction with Washington in the months ahead.
