Byun Woo-seok confirms his first return to work since ‘Lovely Runner’

Actor Byun Woo-seok returns to the small screen through MBC's new drama 'Perfect Crown'. He received a lot of love for last year's 'Lovely Runner' and is raising expectations as he plans to meet viewers with a new character.

Byun Woo-seok said, "I am really excited and looking forward to greeting you with a new character after a long time. I am grateful that you are showing a lot of interest, and I want to show you a better version of myself."

Romance drama set in a constitutional monarchy

'Perfect Crown' is set in a fictional worldview in which modern Korea is a constitutional monarchy. It depicts the love story of Sung Hee-joo (played by IU), a chaebol heiress who has everything but is a commoner, and Prince Ian (played by Byun Woo-seok), who is the son of a king but has nothing.

Byun Woo-seok cited the narrative of Prince Ian and the unique setting of a constitutional monarchy as the reasons for choosing this work. He said, "As I read the script, I pictured myself acting as Prince Ian, and it touched me emotionally. As soon as I read the script, I felt like I really wanted to do it."

‘Solitude, indomitable spirit, love of the people’ three keywords

Byun Woo-seok chose ‘solitude’, ‘indaunted spirit’, and ‘people’s love’ as keywords to describe his character. He explained, "I always show dignity in public and maintain the dignity and dignity of a member of the royal family. On the outside, I appear to have everything, but in reality, I am in a situation where I have no one to rely on within the royal family."

He added, “Nevertheless, he receives love and attention from the people and is the most beloved member of the royal family.”

A delicate approach to character expression

To express the character, Byun Woo-seok said, "I thought that as much as he was loved by the people, there would also be envy and jealousy at the same time." “He is kind to some, but cold to others. Because he is a character who cannot show any flaws, I thought a lot about his relationships with the characters and tried to express subtle emotional changes,” he said.

Regarding the romance, he said, "I tried to focus on the narrative of Prince Ian in the script. I believed that the prince's romance could be portrayed in depth just through writing and narrative."

Byun Woo-seok said, “It is a fun work to learn about what decisions each character makes and what results come from those decisions in the special setting of a 21st century constitutional monarchy.” He added, “The changes in the relationships between the characters will also be an interesting point to watch.”
