Found a rare fossil while scuba diving with my father

Aiden Andrews, a 16-year-old boy from Wyoming, USA, is making headlines after discovering a Megalodon tooth about 15 cm (6 inches) long while scuba diving off the coast of Manasota Key, Florida.

Aiden went diving with his father, Brian Andrews, under the guidance of Fossil Junkies, a local fossil exploration tour company. While the father and son were filming the exploration process with an underwater camera, Aiden found a huge tooth on the sea floor and pulled it out himself.

The tooth that father Brian confirmed was a megalodon tooth the size of the palm of one's hand, and a video of the two people sharing joy was released, attracting attention.

Megalodon, the largest shark in history

Megalodon is an ancient shark that is estimated to have existed from about 23 million years ago to 3.6 million years ago, and boasted a body length of up to 18 meters (about 60 feet). It is about three times the size of the existing great white shark and is known to be the largest predatory fish in the history of the Earth.

“Small Megalodon teeth are not uncommon to find, but larger ones like the one Aiden found are quite rare,” Captain John Kriatzulas, the tour company's representative, told local media.

Megalodon teeth are rare and traded at high prices

Megalodon teeth are highly valued among collectors. According to the Fosil Junkies website, a tooth measuring about 10 cm (4 inches) is sold for about $400 (about 550,000 won), and the 15 cm tooth that Aiden found is not currently on the sale list due to its rarity.

This discovery once again proves that the Florida coast is a treasure trove of ancient marine life fossils, attracting the attention of fossil collectors and paleontology enthusiasts.
