410,000 KitKats disappeared by the truckload

A truck carrying more than 12 tons of new chocolate brand KitKat, owned by Nestlé, was stolen in Europe. According to industry reports, the truck was carrying 413,793 KitKat bars, and both the vehicle and its cargo remain unaccounted for.

According to Nestlé, the truck disappeared during the week of March 23 while leaving central Italy for Poland. The company said the vehicle in question was traveling between a production facility and a distribution base, and the investigation is ongoing with local authorities and supply chain partners.

Chocolate industry on the rise ahead of Easter

This theft incident is causing quite a stir in the chocolate industry. As the stolen quantity was scheduled to be distributed to multiple markets across Europe, there are concerns about stock shortages ahead of the Easter season, when chocolate sales are most active throughout the year.

Nestle is preparing for the possibility that stolen KitKats may be resold across Europe through unofficial distribution channels. The company plans to track stolen items using a unique batch code printed on each KitKat bar. If the code is scanned and matches the stolen quantity, the system automatically provides instructions to report it to KitKat.

Nestle spokesperson responds with humor comparing slogans

A Nestlé spokesperson gave a witty response to this incident, quoting Kit Kat's famous slogan. “We’ve always encouraged people to ‘take a break’ with their Kit Kats,” he said. “But it seems the thieves took that message too literally and made a ‘break’ with over 12 tonnes of chocolate.”

So far, the truck and its cargo of chocolate have not been found, and Nestlé is working hard to recover hundreds of thousands of KitKat bars before they end up on the informal market.
