1,291 cheesesteaks, more than doubling the previous record
Philadelphia International Airport set a Guinness World Record for the world's longest cheesesteak queue in celebration of National Cheesesteak Day. According to related reports, a total of 1,291 sandwiches were lined up in a row spanning approximately 365 meters (1,200 feet), more than double the previous record of 500.
More than 100 employees and volunteers participated in this challenge, which was held on March 24 in the passageway between the airport's Terminals B and C. Philadelphia's famous cheesesteak restaurants, including Geno's Steaks, Chickie's & Pete's, and Jim's South St Famous Cheesesteaks, also contributed.
449 kg (990 pounds) of steak and 102 kg (225 pounds) of cheese sauce were used to achieve this record. Guinness World Records official adjudicator Michael Empric confirmed that the certification conditions were met, which included that all the buns touched each other and that all food used had to be consumed or donated.
‘City of Brotherly Love’ for unpaid security guards
The significance of this event goes beyond simply breaking records. All of the completed cheesesteaks were provided to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees who were working without pay due to a partial shutdown of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Pete Ciarrocchio, CEO of Cheeky's & Pete's, said, "Breaking a world record is always great, but the best part of today was serving cheesesteaks to TSA employees who are working without pay. This is the 'City of Brotherly Love,' and these people are working without pay."
