6 Pitchers Who Stole the Show in Their 2026 MLB Debuts
Hancock, Schlittler, Painter and others explode with potential from Opening Day

- •Six MLB pitchers delivered standout performances in their first starts of 2026.
- •Hancock, Schlittler, and Painter headlined a wave of dominant prospect debuts.
- •Their outings signal potential rotation shifts that could shape the season's contenders.
Opening Day Arrived With a Bang
No sooner had the 2026 MLB season tipped off than a wave of long-awaited prospects delivered on the promises their organizations had been banking on. None of the six pitchers highlighted here have ever appeared in an All-Star Game or received Cy Young Award votes — yet their performances set the tone for what could be a landmark season.
Hancock's 180-Degree Turn
Perhaps the most dramatic transformation belonged to Seattle Mariners right-hander Emerson Hancock. Selected sixth overall in the 2020 Draft, Hancock had underwhelmed through his first 162⅔ MLB innings, posting a 4.81 ERA and 5.49 FIP. Against the Cleveland Guardians, however, he looked like a different pitcher entirely: six no-hit innings, a career-high nine strikeouts, and just one walk. His low arm slot generated devastating fastballs and a sharp sweeper. If Hancock has truly turned a corner, Seattle's rotation may be even more dangerous than advertised.
Schlittler Picks Up Where He Left Off
New York Yankees right-hander Will Schlittler announced himself on the national stage last postseason, striking out 12 Red Sox batters across eight scoreless innings in the Wild Card Series. He wasted no time reminding fans what the fuss was about in 2026, going 5⅓ scoreless innings against the San Francisco Giants with eight strikeouts and zero walks. With Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón unlikely to return until May at the earliest, Schlittler's composure is a lifeline for New York's rotation.
Painter's Long-Awaited Debut
For Andrew Painter, the moment itself was everything. MLB Pipeline's No. 26 overall prospect, Painter missed most of 2023–24 recovering from Tommy John surgery before returning to post a 5.26 ERA in 118 minor-league innings last season. Against the Washington Nationals in his MLB debut, he allowed just one run over 5⅓ innings, struck out eight, and issued one walk. The Phillies rotation has been among baseball's elite all decade — Painter has the ceiling to push it even higher.
Messick Silences the Defending Champions
Second-year Guardians left-hander Gavin Messick authored one of the week's most impressive performances, holding the back-to-back World Series champion Dodgers to zero runs across six innings in Los Angeles. His 85.3 mph average exit velocity on 15 batted balls and a 40.9 percent chase rate on pitches outside the zone were proof of deliberate execution, not luck. As Cleveland chases a second straight AL Central title, Messick looks like a genuine rotation piece.
Cabrera Justifies the Cubs' Gamble
The Chicago Cubs sent three prospects, including outfielder Owen Caissie, to Miami for right-hander Edward Cabrera. In his Cubs debut, Cabrera one-hit the Los Angeles Angels over six innings: five strikeouts, one walk, 15 whiffs on 40 swings, and a 61.3 percent strike rate. After posting a career-low 8.3 percent walk rate last season — the first time he had dipped below 10 percent — a further refinement in control could vault Cabrera into the rotation's upper tier.
Burns Shows His Ace Ceiling
The No. 2 pick in the 2024 Draft, Cincinnati Reds right-hander Rhett Burns exited after 78 pitches but left little doubt about his upside: five innings, one hit, seven strikeouts, no runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Even as the Reds manage his workload carefully, Burns signaled that the breakthrough many have been anticipating may finally be at hand.
