Artemis 2 Launches First Crewed Moon Voyage in 52 Years
Four astronauts embark on a 10-day lunar flyby, marking the 21st century's first human journey to the moon

- •NASA's Artemis 2 launched on April 1, sending four astronauts toward the moon for the first time in 52 years.
- •The mission sets multiple historic firsts, including the first woman, Black astronaut, and non-American to travel to the moon.
- •The crewed flyby is a critical precursor to Artemis 3, which aims for an actual lunar landing.
Humanity Returns to the Moon After Half a Century
For the first time since Apollo 17 in 1972, humans are bound for the moon. NASA launched Artemis 2 on April 1 at 6:35 p.m. EDT from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, sending four astronauts on a 10-day voyage around the moon aboard the Orion spacecraft atop the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket.
"Liftoff! The crew of Artemis 2 now bound for the moon. Humanity's next great voyage begins," NASA spokesperson Derrol Nail announced during the live broadcast.
Why This Mission Matters
Artemis 2 is more than a lunar flyby — it is a collection of historic firsts. It marks the first crewed flight of SLS and Orion, following the uncrewed Artemis 1 test in 2022. The crew includes the first woman, first Black astronaut, and first non-American to travel to the moon. Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen becomes the first Canadian to enter deep space.
The four-member crew — Commander Reid Weisman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Mission Specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen — will also set a new record for the farthest humans have ever traveled from Earth: approximately 406,841 kilometers, some 6,400 km beyond the record set by Apollo 13 in 1970.
"If there is something to celebrate, it's that we are at a time when everyone who has a dream gets to work equally hard to achieve that," Koch said before launch.
An estimated 400,000 spectators gathered along Florida's Space Coast to witness the launch.
The Arc of Lunar Exploration
The moon race began as a Cold War rivalry. After landing on the moon six times between 1969 and 1972, NASA's lunar program fell dormant for over five decades due to budget cuts and shifting political priorities.
In the 21st century, the moon has regained strategic importance. China's growing lunar ambitions and the rise of commercial space companies prompted NASA to launch the Artemis program in 2017. The goal is not merely to revisit the moon, but to establish a sustainable presence as a stepping stone toward Mars.
Artemis 1 validated the Orion capsule and SLS rocket in 2022. Artemis 2 now tests crewed operations. A crewed landing is planned for Artemis 3.
What Comes Next [AI Analysis]
Artemis 2's success is likely to serve as a pivotal milestone in NASA's return-to-moon roadmap. The crew will validate life support systems, communications, and emergency procedures in deep space — data that will directly inform the safety planning for Artemis 3's crewed lunar landing.
Geopolitically, the mission carries additional weight. With China targeting a crewed lunar landing in the early 2030s, the Artemis program represents not just scientific exploration but a contest for leadership in the new space age. Debates over lunar resource rights — particularly water ice at the south pole — are likely to intensify.
The inclusion of a Canadian astronaut also signals the expanding role of international partners under the Artemis Accords. Further participation from Europe, Japan, and other signatory nations in future missions appears increasingly likely.
