Where Does a House Begin?

Kerala, Cartagena, Amman, Tromsø, Zwolle. These cities share little in terms of climate, topography, or culture — yet they are united by a set of architectural proposals now drawing international attention. Seven unbuilt residential projects, submitted by the ArchDaily community, reframe the house not as an isolated object but as a spatial system in dialogue with its environment.

None of these buildings exist. Yet they are not mere fantasies: each confronts real constraints — sloping terrain, regulatory limits, extreme weather — head-on.

Why Unbuilt Architecture Matters

Throughout architectural history, unrealized projects have functioned as laboratories. Free from budget and construction constraints, they allow ideas to be pushed to their logical conclusions. These seven proposals use that freedom not to escape reality, but to engage it more directly.

The range is wide. Some projects stack domestic spaces vertically to maximize compact urban plots. Others embed themselves partially below grade, organizing life around excavated courtyards. Several adapt to sloping sites by treating the section as the primary design tool. Regulatory constraints become generative forces in others, producing typological transformations that would not emerge from a blank slate.

What unites them is a shared design philosophy: structure the house through section, material, and environmental performance rather than visual expression. According to reporting from the architecture community, these proposals deliberately step back from the spectacle of star architecture to focus on the relationship between daily life and the physical reality of the site.

A Long Thread in Architecture

The serious engagement of residential architecture with its environment has roots in the mid-twentieth century. Frank Lloyd Wright's organic architecture — the idea that buildings should grow from the land — laid an early foundation. Regional movements followed, insisting that climate, local material, and topography be the primary design drivers.

In the twenty-first century, with climate pressures intensifying, this approach has become increasingly urgent. A monsoon-adapted house in Kerala demands an entirely different spatial logic than a dwelling designed for the polar darkness of Tromsø. There is no universal grammar for responding to place.

That these projects emerged from an open community submission — rather than from a curated selection of prominent firms — is itself significant. It suggests that environmental responsiveness in residential design has moved from a niche pursuit to a widely shared mode of architectural thinking. The experiments happening at the scale of the house may well be shaping the larger built environment to come.
