Humble architecture in a Mediterranean landscape
A new residential building has been completed at the foot of Mount Montgó in Spain's Jávea region. This house, named 'Filipines House', was designed by Spanish architecture office TO DO hub d'arquitectura and was completed in 2025.
This house, with a total area of 327㎡, intentionally excluded symbolic gestures or ostentatious forms. Instead, a clear integration with the surrounding environment was pursued through horizontal volume, understated proportion, and land occupation that preserves the legibility of the landscape.
Respect for place
Angel Zaragoza and Borja Costa, who led the design, selected 'respect for place and formal precision' as the core philosophy of this project. Rather than allowing the building to become the main character in front of the magnificent natural scenery of Mt. Mongolia, the approach was taken to recede into the background.
The design team included Jordi Costa, Alba Monfort, and Begonya Sastre, and Edificaciones RC was in charge of construction. Inside, products from Omelette Editions and Point 1920 were used to create a warm yet restrained atmosphere unique to the Mediterranean.
The flow of Mediterranean modern residential architecture
The Philippine House reflects recent architectural trends prominent in the Mediterranean region. Design that adapts to the terrain and climate, use of local materials, and horizontal layout considering energy efficiency are preferred over flashy landmark-type houses.
In particular, Javea in the Valencia region of Spain is an area where immigrants and demand for villas steadily flow from all over Europe due to its mild climate and beautiful coastal scenery. In this context, the demand for houses equipped with modern residential conveniences without damaging the natural landscape continues to increase.
This work by TO DO hub d'arquitectura is evaluated as an example of how architecture that quietly permeates the landscape, rather than ostentatious architecture, is possible.
