An artist who crosses the border between film and art

Film director and painter Oh Jeom-kyun's invitation exhibition 'Spring is on its way!' will be held at Gallery 0doC (Yeongdo C) in Yeonhui-dong, Seoul until April 3.

Artist Oh Jeom-gyun said about his world of work, "My work is based on ideas and intuition rather than craftsmanship," and "I believe it should be renewed every day." In this exhibition, he presents two or more different works together and hopes to convey to the audience the 'third energy' that occurs when works that conflict or differ from each other are connected.

Selection of painters with film experience

Artist Oh confessed that he has been making movies for much longer than making art. Recently, it has been a trend in the art world to exhibit video works together in solo exhibitions, but he said he would rather explore the possibilities of art language further.

His explanation is, “Art is the most experimental among art genres, and it is a field that recognizes it as a natural right even when it boldly overturns the existing paradigm.”

Theme and message of the exhibition work

This exhibition includes works with the theme 'Spring Days, Even in the Kitchen,' an installation work that opens a gap in the white cube, 'Birth,' a performance that deals with the low birth rate issue, a work about Trump, and works with the theme 'But Spring Days Come.'

The artist is more interested in the invisible flow and network of energy created through interaction rather than the physical form of the object. He revealed that he came up with the idea of 'the scenery inside the train' to show the 'relationship' between people and things, through images of quantum and waves.

Artist Oh explained, "It was important how to handle the space between objects," and "By giving waves to the color dots that distinguish each object, I hoped that various and complex emotions, such as attraction to the opposite sex, surging impulses, and boiling jealousy, could be conveyed."

Evaluation of work by experts

Professor Joo Su-wan of Woosuk University commented on Oh's work, "On the one hand, it seems to be sarcastic about humans who pretend to be noble, and on the other hand, it seems to represent, like Freud, that primal desires are the very foundation of human culture."

Regarding the installation work 'Baby Crying', he analyzed, "Through the performance of destroying a baby bed, it raised awareness to rethink concepts such as sex, childbirth, and culture."

Regarding the painting depicting lovers kissing on the subway, Professor Joo interpreted, "The many people in the painting could be just one person. I, who has various perspectives on life within us, has appeared in various forms."

He explained that the work depicting a walking figure is “a kind of temporal cubism,” which “disassembles objects in various times and puts them simultaneously on one screen.” Regarding the work depicting the face of an Arhat excavated from the Changnyeongsa Temple site, he expressed special affection, saying, “I can feel the smile of an enlightened person who sees human contradictions, lust, love, and fear as they are.”
