New Harry Potter series actor suffers death threats
Actor Paapa Essiedu, who plays Severus Snape in HBO's new Harry Potter TV series, has reportedly suffered significant levels of online harassment and death threats since his casting was announced.
After the trailer for the new series was released on the HBO Max YouTube channel on March 25, fans continued to compare it to the original film, and opinions for and against the new casting were sharply divided. Some fans poured out criticism and threatening comments aimed directly at the actors, and Essiedu revealed that he received comments containing death threats on Instagram.
HBO deploys security team and conducts social media response training
HBO Max CEO Casey Bloys said in an interview with Variety on March 24 that the company has been preparing in advance for such a situation.
CEO Bloys commented, “In the case of large IP works, there are passionate fans and people with strong opinions, which can sometimes lead to scary situations.” “We anticipated this and provided training on how to deal with social media and best practices,” he added. “Of course, we also have a strong security team in place.”
Essiedu “The threats actually became the driving force behind my acting.”
Essiedu himself said that this abuse “acted as a driving force” for his acting. However, HBO is taking active measures to protect actors, such as deploying a dedicated security team and establishing a systematic crisis response system.
As the issue of online harassment that occurs behind fandom culture has once again surfaced, interest in measures to protect cast members from large franchise production companies is increasing.
