A Miracle Day for the Man Who Almost Walked Away

Just two weeks ago, as he turned 30 with only 122 major league plate appearances to his name, Tristan Gray sat down with his wife Madelyn for a frank conversation. After nine years of professional baseball spent mostly in the minors, retirement had become a real topic — not just a passing thought.

The next day, he got the call: he'd made the Opening Day roster.

On Friday at Target Field, Gray made the most of his improbable opportunity. He launched his first career grand slam to cap a seven-run seventh inning, lifting the Minnesota Twins to a 10-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in their home opener.

"You try to fight off the tough thoughts, the doubt, all of that," Gray said. "It just grows and grows. Thankfully today I get to sit on this one for a little bit."

Nine Years in One Swing

Drafted by Pittsburgh out of Rice in 2017, Gray bounced through Tampa Bay, Miami, Oakland, Pittsburgh, and Chicago — collecting waiver claims and trades along the way. This past winter alone, he was traded twice: first to Boston, then to Minnesota.

He survived a spring training competition for a utility infield spot, beating out Ryan Kreidler and Orlando Arcia. Sporadic playing time seemed likely — until starting shortstop Brooks Lee fell ill Thursday, opening the door for consecutive starts.

Gray was frustrated by a bases-loaded flyout in the sixth. But he didn't stew on it long. Through a 57-minute rain delay caused by a power outage, he stayed ready. When Byron Buxton was hit by a pitch to spark the seventh-inning rally, Gray delivered the exclamation point.

"It was really just a relief," he said. "Trusting that all of our preparation was going to come through."

A Call Waiting in Houston

After the game, Gray's mind was already in Houston, where Madelyn — expecting the couple's second child — had already texted him. The heavy conversation they'd shared just two weeks earlier would now have a very different sequel.

"Those thoughts definitely crept in," Gray said. "Thankfully, the next day I got told I made the team. It's pretty crazy how that works out."

"This game is hard," said Buxton. "To work that hard and finally get an opportunity and make the most of it — it's incredible."
