MLB's Top Prospect Griffin Doubles in First At-Bat, Cubs' Horton Exits Early with Forearm Discomfort
19-year-old Griffin becomes youngest position player since Juan Soto; Horton pulled after just 17 pitches

- •MLB's #1 prospect Konnor Griffin doubled in his first MLB at-bat at 105.8 mph.
- •Griffin, 19, is the youngest position player to debut since Juan Soto in 2018.
- •Cubs starter Cade Horton left his second start after only 17 pitches with right forearm discomfort.
Griffin Announces Arrival in Just Five Pitches
Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Konnor Griffin made his Major League Baseball debut Friday against the Baltimore Orioles in Pittsburgh's home opener, wasting no time making an impact. Baseball's consensus top prospect ripped an RBI double into the left-center gap at 105.8 mph off the bat in his very first MLB at-bat, coming around to score on a subsequent single.
Youngest Position Player Since Juan Soto
At 19 years and 267 days old, Griffin is the youngest position player to debut in MLB since Juan Soto broke in with Washington in 2018. He is also the first teenager to play for Pittsburgh since Aramis Ramirez in 1998. The ninth overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, Griffin slashed .333/.438/.521 with 21 home runs, 94 RBIs and 65 stolen bases in 122 minor league games last season, earning Baseball America's Minor League Player of the Year honors.
Horton's Early Exit Clouds Cubs' Rotation
In Cleveland, Cubs starter Cade Horton was forced from his second start of the season after only 17 pitches due to right forearm discomfort. After a clean first inning, Horton issued a walk and then signaled to the dugout following a 93.8 mph fastball in the second inning. Manager Craig Counsell and head athletic trainer Nick Frangella visited the mound before pulling Horton in favor of veteran Colin Rea.
Horton finished last season as the NL Rookie of the Year runner-up, posting an 11-4 record with a 2.67 ERA and a dominant 1.03 ERA after the All-Star break. His early exit raises significant concerns for a Cubs club banking on his arm in the rotation.
