Top MLB Prospect Konnor Griffin Set for Pirates Debut at Age 19
No. 1 overall prospect called up ahead of Pittsburgh home opener — 'Put an 80 next to his name'

- •Konnor Griffin, 19, has been called up to make his MLB debut with the Pirates.
- •The No. 1 overall prospect boasts plus grades across all five scouting tools.
- •His promotion comes less than one year after being drafted, a remarkably fast rise.
A New Star Rises in Pittsburgh
The Pittsburgh Pirates are promoting their top prospect Konnor Griffin to the MLB roster ahead of their home opener on April 4. Griffin's arrival at the highest level at just 19 years old has surprised even his most ardent supporters with its speed.
A Pirates official told a baseball media outlet, "Just put an 80 next to his name for what to expect" — a reference to the top of the 20-to-80 scouting scale, reserved for the elite of the elite.
Why This Debut Matters
Griffin was selected 9th overall by the Pirates in the 2024 Draft. Despite being considered the best tool set in the high school class, concerns about holes in his swing kept him out of top-of-draft conversations — a fortunate outcome for Pittsburgh, who landed a potential No. 1 talent at pick nine.
Once in the system, Griffin erased every concern at remarkable speed. From his first Spring Training in 2025 through Single-A and all the way to Double-A as a teenager, he finished the season as the clear-cut No. 1 prospect on MLB Pipeline's rankings.
All five of his tools — hit, power, speed, defense, and arm — grade out at 60 or higher on the scouting scale. His 70-grade speed produced an absurd 87 steals in 88 attempts in his senior high school year, and that translated directly to pro ball with 65 stolen bases across three levels last season. His arm, which touched 96 mph off the mound as a prep player, is a clear asset at shortstop, where early talk of an outfield move has completely dissipated.
Generational Expectations
Many inside Pittsburgh's organization believe Griffin will ultimately prove to be the best player in the 2024 Draft class. Few expected it to happen this fast. Given the Pirates' historically conservative approach to developing young prep talent, this accelerated timeline is all the more remarkable.
