Summary
  • Reddit is considering implementing biometric authentication systems such as Face ID and Touch ID to block AI bots while maintaining anonymity.
  • CEO Steve Huffman explained that biometric authentication is the most convenient way to verify humanness without compromising user anonymity.
  • Co-founder Alexis Ohanian expressed skepticism about whether Reddit users who value anonymity would accept face scans.

Reddit's New Solution Amid AI Bot Proliferation

Reddit is actively considering implementing a biometric authentication system to address the bot problem on its platform. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman appeared on the TBPN podcast on March 21 and mentioned user verification methods utilizing Face ID, Touch ID, and passkey authentication.

Huffman explained, "The most convenient method is something like Face ID or Touch ID," adding that "through the act of an actual person touching or looking, you can prove you're human." He evaluated biometric authentication as "the most efficient means" of confirming users are real people without compromising anonymity.

Reddit has seen the authenticity of its platform significantly undermined in recent years due to the surge in AI-based bots. Some bots have been exploited for secret experiments, and cases of automated accounts manipulating conversations or distributing spam are increasing.

Anonymity vs. Verification: Can Reddit Have Both?

Huffman emphasized that Reddit will continue to maintain user anonymity as a core value. "What we promise users is that we don't need to know your name, but we want to know that you're a person," he said, describing it as "a gradual evolution process where platforms find the right balance between authenticity and privacy."

Beyond biometric authentication, Reddit is considering various options including decentralized third-party authentication services and ID verification services. Huffman explained that the spectrum ranges from lightweight to invasive methods, but made clear that the platform will not collect real names or personal information.

Co-Founder's Skeptical Response

However, concerns have emerged even within Reddit. Alexis Ohanian, Reddit co-founder and former board chairman, expressed skepticism on X (formerly Twitter), saying "I don't know how to convince Reddit users or lurkers to do face scans."

Reddit's community is famous for its culture of valuing anonymity and free exchange of opinions. Particularly in subreddits dealing with sensitive topics, anonymity is essential, and there are significant concerns that implementing biometric authentication could lead to user attrition.

Competing Platforms' Response Status

Reddit isn't alone in facing the bot problem. Major social media platforms are responding in different ways.

PlatformBot Blocking MethodAnonymity Maintained
X (Twitter)Paid verification (X Premium)Partially maintained
Meta (Facebook/Instagram)Real-name based accountsReal names required
Reddit (under review)Biometric authentication (Face ID/Touch ID)Plans to maintain
DiscordPhone number verificationPartially maintained

X is attempting to block bots through paid subscriptions, while Meta maintains its real-name policy. Discord, meanwhile, is finding a middle ground through phone number verification. Reddit's biometric authentication approach is a differentiated strategy in that it can block bots without compromising anonymity.

Potential Collaboration with Worldcoin

Reddit is also considering introducing a biometric authentication system based on World ID in collaboration with Tools of Humanity, founded by Sam Altman. World ID authenticates users through iris scanning and is a system that proves 'humanness' without collecting personal information.

However, iris scanning could trigger privacy invasion controversies. Backlash is particularly expected in communities like Reddit that value anonymity.

[AI Analysis] The Future of Anonymous Platforms

Reddit's consideration of implementing biometric authentication is likely to become an important experiment that could gauge the future of anonymous social media. As AI bots become increasingly sophisticated, platforms face the challenge of finding balance between authenticity verification and anonymity protection.

If Reddit actually implements biometric authentication, the following changes are anticipated.

First, bot activity is likely to decrease significantly. Face ID and Touch ID physically block automated account creation. Second, there is a risk of user attrition. Users may be reluctant to provide biometric information, especially in communities dealing with sensitive topics. Third, it could become an industry standard. If Reddit's experiment succeeds, other anonymous platforms may adopt similar methods.

However, technical implementation is also a challenge. Reddit is likely to use authentication APIs from Apple or Google without directly collecting biometric information, but even in this case, gaining user trust will be crucial.

As Huffman stated, this will be a "gradual evolution," and it's a challenge that not only Reddit but all social media platforms must solve in the AI era.
