Summary
  • First-person cinematic horror Project Songbird has been released
  • It is a work inspired by Alan Wake and art house films
  • It is an emotional horror game that an indie developer has put a lot of effort into for many years.

The composer's seclusion, and the forest awakens

'Project Songbird', a first-person cinematic narrative horror game exclusively developed by Connor Rush of indie developer Fyre Games, has been released. Players take on the role of Dakota, a musician in a slump, and embark on a journey to a remote Appalachian forest to record a new album.

Inspiration beyond genre boundaries

Project Songbird continues the tradition of survival horror such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill, but seeks its own unique direction. The developer revealed that he drew key inspiration from the surreal narrative of Alan Wake, the emotional storytelling of Firewatch and What Remains of Edith Finch, and the experimental spirit of The Beginner's Guide.

Not only game but also movie elements were deeply reflected. The goal is to recreate the atmosphere of Ari Aster and Robert Eggers' slow-burn arthouse horror, especially 'The Witch.' By studying ‘The Blair Witch Project’ and ‘The Ritual’, we designed the forest itself to feel like a living, breathing character.

Narrative led by all-star voice actors

A brilliant voice actor joined to complete the movie-like experience. The main character, Dakota, is played by Valerie Rose Lohman of What Remains of Edith Finch and Wolfenstein: Youngblood. Dying Light 2's Jonah Scott and Marvel Rivals' Aleks Le participate in supporting roles, adding depth to the dialogue scenes.

Musician-like combat, the option of stealth

Gameplay is designed to support the narrative. Dakota is a musician, not a super soldier. A heavy feeling is felt every time you swing an ax or fire a rifle, and even when upgraded, every battle maintains tension. So stealth always remains a valid option. You can quietly avoid dangerous encounters by using tools such as bottles or microphones.

A game like a developer’s diary

Connor Rush explained that all of Fyre Games' works serve as his own diary. The idea is to create a game based on the fears or uncomfortable thoughts you had at a certain time. The emotional attachment, bold experimentation, and narrative intimacy that only small-scale indie games can capture are at the core of Project Songbird. The developer's message that he hopes years of passion will seep into every moment is impressive.
