Shanghai's abandoned textile factory is reborn as a gallery where art and commerce coexist
BROWNIE/Project in M50 Creative Park, realizing harmony between industrial heritage and modern gallery

- •An abandoned textile factory in Shanghai's M50 Creative Park has been reborn as a gallery.
- •Industrial heritage, such as concrete pillars and wood from the Suzhou River Bridge, was preserved.
- •It is attracting attention as a complex cultural platform where art and commerce coexist.
From abandoned factory to gallery, reinterpretation of space
BROWNIE/Project Gallery, located in Shanghai's M50 Creative Park, is attracting attention as a new space that blurs the boundaries between art and commerce. This is a remodeled building that was previously used as a wool textile factory. It functions as a complex cultural platform that explores the interaction between space, people, and life beyond a simple photo exhibition space.
Offhand Practice, which was in charge of the architectural design, focused on maximizing the industrial characteristics of the existing factory building. Concrete columns, steel frames, and vintage wooden structures collected from old bridges over the Suzhou River remain throughout the space.
Coexistence of historical elements and modern functions
The gallery client wanted to preserve these historical elements while introducing new features, which fit perfectly with the design team's vision. As modern exhibition functions are added to the traces of past industrial facilities, visitors have a unique experience that reflects time.
M50 Creative Park is Shanghai's representative art district, and since the early 2000s, abandoned factories have been transformed into galleries and studios, establishing itself as the center of Chinese contemporary art. BROWNIE/Project continues this trend of urban regeneration and seeks new points of contact between commerce and art through the medium of photography.
The number of cases of old industrial heritage being converted into cultural spaces is increasing around the world, and BROWNIE/Project is also evaluated as a successful example of giving contemporary uses while respecting the memories of the place.
