Sony officially announced on March 27 (local time) that it would increase the prices of its entire PlayStation 5 (PS5) product lineup globally. This measure includes the basic PS5, Digital Edition, PS5 Pro, and the portable PlayStation Portal.
Sony said on its official blog, "We have decided to increase prices due to continued pressure from the global economic environment. This is an essential measure to continue providing innovative and high-quality gaming experiences to players around the world."
New prices by region
The price change will take effect globally starting April 2. In the United States, the basic PS5 will increase from $549.99 to $649.99, the PS5 Digital Edition will increase from $449.99 to $599.99, and the PS5 Pro will increase from $749.99 to $899.99.
In the UK, the PS5 is priced at £569.99, the Digital Edition at £519.99, and the PS5 Pro at £789.99. In Europe, they are 649.99 euros, 599.99 euros, and 899.99 euros, respectively. In the Japanese market, the price of PS5 will increase to 97,980 yen, the digital edition will increase to 89,980 yen, and the PS5 Pro will increase to 137,980 yen.
In the case of PlayStation Portal, the new recommended retail price has been increased by $50 to $249.99 in the U.S., 219.99 pounds in the U.K., 249.99 euros in Europe, and 39,980 yen in Japan.
Cost pressure across the console industry
This price increase was expected due to the rising cost of semiconductor components and the prolonged instability of the global supply chain. There will be a significant increase of $100 for the basic PS5 and $150 for the PS5 Pro, which is expected to significantly increase the burden on consumers.
