Four regions in Jeollanam-do selected as sites for regeneration of old tourist attractions
Jeollanam-do Province selected four locations, including Gangjin, Jangseong, Wando, and Gurye, as the target sites for the ‘2026 Regeneration Project of Old Tourist Sites.’ This project is intended to increase the length of stay of tourists and revitalize the local economy by transforming old tourist facilities into experiential content centers.
The selected projects include the creation of an experiential nightscape using idle facilities in Gangjin-gun, the remodeling of a memorial hall based on media content in Jangseong-gun, the creation of media art content in Wando-gun, and the creation of a children's experience facility using local specialties in Gurye-gun.
Evaluation centered on ‘experience value’ beyond simple facility improvement
In this selection process, Jeonnam Province used as a key criterion whether it could provide new experiences to tourists beyond simple facility improvement. Business feasibility and content originality were also comprehensively evaluated.
The province plans to reflect expert advice in selected projects to improve the completeness of experiential content and create a competitive tourist destination. The project to regenerate old tourist attractions began in 2018, and a total of 35.1 billion won has been invested in 21 locations to date.
Choi Young-joo, head of the Tourism and Sports Bureau of Jeonnam Province, said, “It is difficult for a tourist destination to secure competitiveness by simply improving facilities,” and added, “We will combine the region’s unique story and experiential content to recreate it as an attractive tourist destination that will satisfy both residents and tourists.”
