  • Foreign users have an average order amount of 300-500 baht, with the United States, United Kingdom, China, South Korea, and Japan being the top nationalities.
  • Thai food shows high preference with 627,000 fried rice orders and 326,000 Khao Man Gai orders, while GrabBike usage increased by 30%.

Thailand Emerges as Top Destination for Foreign Remote Workers

Grab, Southeast Asia's largest super app, has announced that orders from foreign users in Thailand have surged by 50% over the past 12 months. The increase was particularly pronounced in delivery services centered around GrabFood and GrabMart, with significant growth in orders from foreign expatriates and digital nomads.

Chirakit Kwangsukstith, Senior Director of Grab Thailand's delivery business, explained: "Thailand has become a preferred destination for many foreigners to live, work, and start businesses due to its affordable cost of living, developed infrastructure, convenient visa application process, and rich cultural appeal. Bangkok, in particular, was recently ranked as the number one city by American remote workers."

Foreign Residents in Thailand Surpass 5.3 Million

According to the Thailand Migration Report 2024, the number of non-Thai residents in Thailand has reached up to 5.3 million, representing an 8% increase compared to 2019. Hundreds of thousands of these are classified as expatriates and digital nomads on permanent or temporary stays.

Grab evaluates these foreign users as "premium customers with high purchasing power." In fact, the average order amount for foreign users is around 300-500 baht (approximately $8.50-$14.50), and the nationalities using Grab services most frequently are the United States, United Kingdom, China, South Korea, and Japan, in that order. Major residential areas include Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, and Hua Hin.

Thai Food Ranks as Top Menu Choice

The most frequently ordered food categories by foreign users were fast food, Thai ready-to-eat dishes, health food, rice bowls and specialty dishes, and takeaway beverages, in that order. Thai food showed particularly high preference, with fried rice topping the list at over 627,000 annual orders, followed by Khao Man Gai (chicken rice) at 326,000 orders. In the beverage category, Thai milk tea dominated with over 127,000 cups sold annually.

For ride-hailing services, two-thirds of foreign users preferred car services such as JustGrab, GrabCar, and GrabCar Premium, while the remaining third used GrabBike. GrabBike usage showed steady growth with a 30% year-over-year increase.

Introduction of AI Translation and Exclusive Discount Pass

Grab has introduced an AI-powered "One Click Translation" feature to enhance convenience for foreign users. This feature instantly translates menu descriptions and store information into nine languages including English, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. This goes beyond the previous limitation of app settings that only supported English.

Director Chirakit emphasized: "This feature not only enhances the convenience of Grab users but also provides new opportunities for merchant partners to reach foreign customers, contributing to increased sales."

Additionally, Grab has launched the Grab Expat Pass, an exclusive discount package for foreigners that provides up to 2,000 baht (approximately $57) in discount benefits across all Grab services including food and grocery delivery, transportation, and parcel delivery.

[AI Analysis] Full-Scale Competition for Foreign-Targeted Super Apps Expected

Grab's strategy demonstrates that securing foreign users is emerging as a new growth driver in the Southeast Asian super app market. With Thailand strengthening policies to attract foreigners, including the introduction of digital nomad visas, the number of foreign residents is likely to increase further.

The AI translation feature, in particular, represents a market expansion strategy through elimination of language barriers beyond simple convenience improvements. This is expected to serve as a catalyst for competitors to consider introducing similar features.

Considering that the average order amount of 300-500 baht is higher than local users, foreign users represent a premium segment with high customer lifetime value (LTV). Grab is likely to lead the competition to secure foreign users across Southeast Asia by continuously expanding exclusive memberships and customized services targeting this demographic.

In the long term, expansion of the super app ecosystem is expected through collaboration with foreign communities, integration of local cultural experience content, and incorporation of financial services.
