Three UN Peacekeepers Killed in Two Days
The deaths of three UN peacekeepers in south Lebanon within two days have cast a harsh spotlight on the dangers facing the approximately 10,000 military personnel of UNIFIL—the UN Interim Force in Lebanon—and the civilians caught in fierce clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters.
UNIFIL spokesperson Kandice Ardiel told UN News from the mission's headquarters in Naqoura, southwest Lebanon, that the situation is "extremely volatile, extremely dangerous" not only for peacekeepers but for civilians who have chosen to remain in conflict-affected areas. Gunfire could be heard in the background during the interview.
2,000 Residents Isolated Near the Blue Line
An estimated 2,000 villagers still live near the Blue Line that separates Israel from Lebanon. Ardiel described the villages as "increasingly cut off from the rest of Lebanon," with residents struggling to obtain basic supplies.
UNIFIL coordinates the movement of agencies delivering food, medicine, and hygiene supplies to southern communities, while also assisting civilians who wish to relocate to safer areas and conducting patrols to provide reassurance to those who remain.
Repeated Violations of Resolution 1701
The mission continues to document rocket and missile fire, Israeli troop movements in southern Lebanon, and frequent violations of UN Security Council Resolution 1701—a 2006 text calling for a full cessation of hostilities in the region. UNIFIL says it will maintain its humanitarian operations despite the escalating dangers.
