205 Works Return, Carrying an Uncomfortable History

The Kunsthaus Zürich has opened a new display of the Emil Bührle Collection this week, presenting 205 works in a sweeping rehang. Among them are five authenticated paintings by Vincent van Gogh and one known forgery. A sixth Van Gogh is undergoing conservation, while a seventh has been withdrawn due to unresolved Nazi-era concerns.

According to multiple reports, the collection ranks as arguably the world's largest privately assembled Van Gogh holdings on public view, rivaled only by the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia.

Emil Bührle: Collector and Arms Dealer

Emil Bührle (1890–1956) remains a deeply controversial figure. Operating from neutral Switzerland, he ran the Oerlikon-Bührle armaments company and became Europe's most successful arms dealer of his era, profiting from weapons sales during the Second World War.

His art collecting peaked during the Nazi period (1933–1945) and its immediate aftermath. Industry sources indicate that a significant number of works entered the collection from Jewish owners who had been persecuted under Nazi rule. While the foundation has published comprehensive provenance data for all paintings, questions persist over several works.

Five Van Goghs, Five Stories

The Self-portrait (summer 1887) captures Van Gogh in Paris just as he discovered the Neo-Impressionists, adopting their characteristic dots and dashes. Originally given to artist friend Emile Bernard, it was purchased by Bührle in 1945.

Head of a Peasant (March 1885), painted in the Dutch village of Nuenen, is the earliest Van Gogh in the collection—part of a series of around 40 peasant portraits made just before The Potato Eaters. Jewish Berlin businessman Gustav Schweitzer acquired it in the mid-1920s, but how it passed through to a Zurich dealer who sold it to Bührle in 1941 remains unresolved.

The Bridges of Asnières (May–July 1887), painted on the banks of the Seine, reflects the Impressionist influence Van Gogh absorbed in Paris. Bührle acquired it in 1951 for £18,000 through London dealer Marlborough Fine Art—a sum that would now translate to tens of millions.

The Sower at Sunset (November 1888) and Branches of Blossoming Almond (May 1890) stand as the collection's twin masterpieces. The former, painted in Arles, draws on a Millet print and Japanese woodblock motifs; it once belonged to the von Mendelssohn family of Berlin. The latter, completed in Auvers-sur-Oise just two months before Van Gogh's death, was stolen in a dramatic 2008 heist alongside works by Cézanne, Monet, and Degas. Both were acquired by Bührle in 1951.

A Collection in Permanent Dispute

Since arriving at Kunsthaus Zürich on long-term loan in 2021, the collection has been displayed twice before. The previous showing focused on 115 works specifically chosen to address provenance sensitivity. This latest display takes a different approach—densely presenting 190 of the 205 works in a single installation.

The choice has divided the art world. Proponents argue it maximizes public access to significant works; critics worry it dilutes accountability for pieces whose ownership histories remain contested.

Outlook [Expert Analysis]

The Bührle Collection's legal and moral reckoning is far from over. Scholars and restitution advocates suggest that pressure on institutions holding Nazi-era acquisitions is likely to intensify in the coming years. Works with documented links to persecuted Jewish owners—such as Head of a Peasant—are increasingly likely to face formal restitution claims. The Kunsthaus's transparency measures may be a step forward, but unresolved provenance cases will continue to shape the collection's future in ways that no rehang can fully resolve.
