Supermassive Games' new game returns with PS5 Pro performance optimization

According to related industry reports, the cinematic horror adventure game 'Directive 8020' will be released as an enhanced version of PlayStation 5 Pro on May 12. The developer announced that it had taken the game's horror atmosphere to the next level through PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), Sony's AI-based upscaling technology, and improved ray tracing.

This game tells the story of the survival of the crew of the spaceship Cassiopeia, who are chased by alien life forms that perfectly imitate their prey. Players experience narrative-driven gameplay where the story permanently branches out based on their choices.

Impact of PS5 Pro enhancements on horror production

The key improvements of the PS5 Pro version are largely summarized in four points.

First, PSSR technology intelligently improves image detail on a frame-by-frame basis. Detailed environmental details, including the spaceship's metal hallways, frost forming in the medical bay, and distorted reflections on helmet visors, have become clearer.

Second, improved ray tracing ensures that light reacts physically accurately. Emergency lights reflect off the bulkhead, lights flicker dynamically over the character's face, and the ice refracts the light with a cold, harsh feel. The developer explained, “Realistic lighting heightens tension in every hallway.”

Third, dynamic shadow rendering speaks the language of fear. It creates a situation where it is unclear whether the moving silhouette is a simple optical illusion or whether an alien hunter is watching. The rich expression of shadows reinforces the sense of anxiety that flows throughout the game.

Fourth, stable performance maintains immersion at the moment of choice. When Anders is frozen in the medical room and Mitchell is trapped in flames, or when you have to decide which of two identical-looking crew members is real, the tension builds naturally without any technical interruption.

Dual Sense Controller Utilization and Supermassive’s Legacy

The developer actively utilized the PS5's dual sense controller function. In particular, the 'Don't Move' tense moment, a tradition of Supermassive Games, well known for 'Until Dawn', was inherited.

Players will experience intuitive interactions, such as instinctively searching for a flashlight in a pitch-black hallway and scanning a room before opening a hatch. “Inputs feel immediate, camera movements remain fluid, and cinematic transitions never lose impact,” the developer emphasized.

Directive 8020 will be released on May 12 on PlayStation 5, and PS5 Pro owners will be able to experience enhanced graphics without a separate update.
