Return to free-run mode for the first time since Black Ops 3

In Call of Duty Black Ops 7's Season 3 update, the 'Freerun' mode that long-awaited fans have been waiting for returns. According to related gaming media reports, free-run mode will be added through a mid-Season 3 update, expected in late April to early May.

The newly introduced Free Run mode consists of a racing format in which 10 players use their movement skills to aim to be the first to cross the finish line.

Bringing back memories of Black Ops 3

Free Run mode is a mode that first appeared in Black Ops 3, released in 2015, and gained great popularity. At the time, players had to use a jetpack movement system to pass a complex obstacle course in the shortest amount of time, and a time penalty was imposed if they failed to hit a target that appeared in the middle of the course.

An official free-run mode has not appeared since Black Ops 3, but the 'Get High' mode and its variants were introduced as a spiritual successor in Modern Warfare (2023). However, unlike the existing free run, which was a solo play method using a timer, Black Ops 7's free run is expected to find a compromise between the original experience and the get high mode.

Released with exclusive map ‘Ascent’

The new free-run mode takes place on the ‘Ascent’ map, which was created specifically for this purpose. This obstacle-only map consists of 10 zones, which the developers describe as a course with "vertigo-inducing jumps and little room for error."

With the release of Free Run mode, a dedicated event will also begin, allowing players to obtain unique weapon skins and various rewards.

Full Season 3 update details

The Season 3 update, which begins on April 2, adds various content in addition to free run. Black Ops 2's 'Plaza' and Black Ops 4's 'Gridlock' maps return, and the MK35 ISR assault rifle and VST submachine gun can also be obtained through the battle pass.
