Summary
  • Valve has released a major update containing a TF2 system message impersonation security vulnerability
  • Over 20 bug fixes contributed directly by community developers
  • Improved visual quality and functionality issues for many maps and cosmetic items

Fixed core security vulnerabilities and major bugs

Valve has released a new update for Team Fortress 2. This update is automatically applied when the game restarts and includes a wide range of fixes ranging from security vulnerabilities to gameplay improvements.

The most notable fix is the resolution of a security vulnerability where color control codes could be exploited to impersonate TF2 system messages. This vulnerability allowed malicious players to trick other players by sending fake messages that looked like official system messages.

In addition, key technical issues were fixed, such as an issue where some custom map assets were not loaded properly on Linux, memory leaks related to dynamic models that occurred on servers running for a long time, and client crashes related to D3D texture flags.

Updates completed with community contributions

What's special about this update is that most of the fixes were made through contributions from community developers. Many community members, including Brandon Little, wget, ficool2, and birchish, participated in bug fixing.

Key community fixes include improving Medi Gun healing target selection to prioritize teammates directly under the crosshairs, fixing prediction errors related to spy clock and stealth, and fixing projectile path errors for Dragon's Fury fireballs.

A number of minor issues that players had been experiencing for a long time, such as the issue of rotation sounds being heard while transporting the teleporter, the Short Circuit projectile offset ignoring the cl_flipviewmodels setting, and the Botkiller team color bug, have also been resolved.

Map and cosmetic item updates

Modifications were also made to several maps. sd_marshlands was renamed to htf_marshlands (hold the flag) to accurately reflect the actual game mode. The transparent water issue found in pl_frontier_final and cp_manor_event has been fixed, and in cp_frostwatch, the issue where the cliff at the first point of stage 1 was survivable with Übercharge has been resolved.

The koth_demolition map has received a major visual overhaul. The map lighting has been changed to a sunset-like golden glow, and the model used for lighting control points has been replaced with one with better collision detection and lighting effects.

In terms of cosmetic items, issues with The Overdose's Festivizer model LOD, Mann of the Hour's hair blending, The Bare Necessities' taunt movement issue, and The Headliner's rigging stretching issue have been fixed. The quality of Taunt: Heartbreaker's taunt props has also been improved, including adding ambient occlusion and improving phong and rim lighting.
