Collaboration stage between hearing impaired idol and wheelchair dancer
The 5th generation boy group Big Ocean has recently garnered a lot of attention by performing with two wheelchair dancers on the music show 'Show Champion' stage. All three members of Big Ocean, a member of Parastar Entertainment, are hearing-impaired idols, and they are continuing their active activities by releasing their third mini-album 'The Greatest Battle' about two years after their debut.
On this stage, Big Ocean performed 'Cold Moon', one of the double title songs. What particularly attracted attention was the presence of wheelchair dancers on stage. Rather than simply being placed on one side of the stage, they naturally blended into the choreography and were with the members from the beginning to the end of the performance. After the stage ended, the fact that only the two wheelchair dancers remained by the members' side during the 'Ending Fairy' scene caused a great stir among fans.
A message of inclusiveness to the industry
Online, reactions are pouring in saying that this stage is “the true representation that K-POP needs.” The fact that an idol group with a hearing impairment collaborated with a dancer with a physical disability is evaluated as showing solidarity between the disabled community beyond a simple performance.
Until now, it has been extremely rare for disabled performers to appear as main dancers on K-POP stages. Big Ocean's latest attempt is attracting attention as an exemplary example of how disabled people can be represented in the mainstream entertainment industry. Fans and netizens are responding positively, saying, “This is the correct expression of disability.”
Attention is focused on how the K-POP industry will follow this door opened by Big Ocean. If more groups and entertainment companies attempt to create inclusive stages, K-POP's global influence is expected to contribute to the spread of social value.
