SBS' new fantasy legal drama 'Phantom Lawyer' continues its upward trend, recording its highest viewership rating as of Friday's episode. According to Nielsen Korea, episode 5, which aired on March 27, achieved a national average viewership rating of 8.7%, ranking first among all channels in the same time slot, and recorded the highest viewership rating among mini-series broadcast on Friday.
On the other hand, the performance of competing works broadcast at the same time slot was mixed. MBC's 'In the Shining Season' rose slightly to 2.6% and is about to air its final two episodes, while JTBC's 'Steel Shining' recorded 1.1% for the 7th episode and 0.8% for the 8th episode, recording the lowest viewer ratings of all time.
Meaning of Friday viewership gap
'Phantom Lawyer' has tended to have somewhat lower viewership ratings on Fridays compared to Saturdays, but it appears to have succeeded in expanding its viewer base by setting a Friday record for the fifth episode. The figure of 8.7% is a meaningful achievement for a terrestrial/cable drama in the current broadcasting environment where competition with OTT platforms is fierce.
In particular, the fact that it ranked first in the mini-series in its time slot shows that the fresh material of combining fantasy and legal genres is receiving a positive response from viewers. On the other hand, 'Steel Shining''s drop of less than 1% suggests that viewer withdrawal is deepening due to the mid-length development, and it is expected that it will not be easy to rebound in the remaining episodes.
