A Modern Project Rooted in Historic Landscape

Architectural studio MVAA has completed a holiday home project in Moldovenești, Cluj County, Romania. Situated within the cultural landscape of the Transylvanian hills, the site sits near natural and cultural landmarks including the Cheile Turzii gorge, the Piatra Secuiului mountain peak, and the historic village of Rimetea. At the local level, the 16th-century Jósika Castle and village churches define the immediate architectural context.

Tradition Reimagined, Not Replicated

The central design challenge was to honor centuries of rural identity while meeting the needs of contemporary living. MVAA chose to reinterpret local architectural language rather than either mimicking historical forms or imposing a style disconnected from the region. According to architectural media coverage, the homes maintain visual continuity with the surrounding rural landscape while optimizing interior spaces for modern use.

The Long Arc of Transylvanian Rural Architecture

Transylvania's rural architecture carries layered influences from Hungarian, Saxon German, and Romanian traditions accumulated over centuries. Landmarks like the 16th-century Jósika Castle and villages such as Rimetea—discussed in UNESCO heritage contexts—underscore the region's significance in European architectural history. After decades of disruption during the communist era, Romanian architects have increasingly sought since the 2000s to reintegrate regional identity into contemporary design. MVAA's project stands as part of that ongoing effort.
